Terrie Charlie

Navajo Artist

Terrie Charlie is a full blooded Native American, descended of the Navajo Tribe. She is the daughter of the very well-known Navajo Potter, Susie Charlie, who is the pioneer of the Navajo Etched pottery. Terrie was born in May of 1979 in Gallup, New Mexico. She has resided most of her life on the Navajo Reservation. Terrie has two sons, Eliah Ray Andrews and Sean Ethan Andrews. She was inspired by her mother in the art and designing of Navajo etched pottery. Her mother Susie, has inspired and taught her children how to hand craft the unique style of Navajo etched pottery. The potteries are hand painted and carefully designed with unique geometric patterns.

Terrie crafts each piece of her work in geometrical southwest designs. The vivid and vibrant colors of her work are hand painted, hand designed, and hand etched. The designs etched into her potteries represents and symbolize the cultural, traditions, and way of life through the Navajo heritage. Each piece of her work is uniquely beautiful in its own way and they are one of a kind piece. The prayer feathers of eagles and other sacred birds used in many Navajo ceremonies are integrated on each piece. Some other Navajo traditional designs used on many Navajo Rugs are also incorporated into her pieces. Terrie also incorporates the earth’s elements, such as landscapes of mother earth, wind, water, air, sun, moon, and fire into her pieces. All these symbolic designs are a reflection of how Native American Indians walk through the beauty of life. Her work comes in many styles, such as the original traditional style her mother originated and the Horse Hair styles. Some are crafted with inlayed turquoise stones. The art has become a family legacy.

Aside from being an artist, Terrie is also currently a member of the New Mexico Army Nation Guard. She has served with the 1116th Trans (Det. 1) out of Gallup, New Mexico from 1997 to 2000, with the 74th Quarter Masters unit out of Topeka, Kansas, from 2000-2003, HHC, 111th MEB, out of Rio Rancho, New Mexico.
